This device was used in ancient China many decades ago. It was used in the same way that we use a hot tub almost. There where still a few differences though. Also the materials that they used then where things like wood. People from that era on kept the traditional tub but made advancements on its use and design. That is one of the main reason of why it has stood they test of time.
Th reason that it caught on so fast was because of the way the heated water made the people feel. We today use hot tubs for the same reasons. The chinese soaking tub with it's heated water and bath salts would relax the people using the tub and ease their pains.
